The Power of the Assist

Not every goal is scored by the person who takes the final shot.

Sometimes it’s the pass — the perfectly timed, almost invisible moment that sets everything in motion. The assist doesn’t get the spotlight, but without it, nothing happens.

Rescue works the same way.

Right now, Waffles and Genesis are waiting. They don’t know there’s a timeline. They don’t know there’s urgency. They don’t know how close — or how far — they are from the person who will change everything. They just know today looks a lot like yesterday.

When we share their story, it’s easy to think in straight lines. Will this person adopt? Will this person foster? Most won’t. And that’s not failure. That’s how it works.

Because rescue is not a straight line. It’s a web. A quiet, living network of people, conversations, coincidences, and “this made me think of you.”

The person who adopts Waffles may never follow us. The person who fosters Genesis may never see our original post.

But someone they know will.

Someone will pause. Someone will feel something. Someone will send a message that begins, “This might sound random, but…” And just like that, the current shifts. We like to think big actions are what matter most. But in rescue, it’s often the smallest ones.

A like. A share. A tag. A text to a friend.

A tiny ripple that travels farther than we ever could.

Waffles doesn’t know what a share is. Genesis has no concept of an algorithm. They don’t understand reach or engagement or networks. They just know what it feels like to wait.

And still — somehow in rescue, again and again — the right person appears.

Not by accident. But because enough people chose to pass the story forward.

This is the power of the assist.

You don’t have to be the one who says yes. You don’t have to open your home.

But you can open a door. You can be the bridge between “still waiting” and “finally home.”

Right now, Waffles and Genesis don’t just need a miracle. They need momentum. They need their story to move — from one person to the next, to the next, to the next — until it lands exactly where it’s meant to.

So if their faces stop you for even a second, don’t keep it to yourself. Share it. Send it. Tag someone. Be part of the current that carries them forward.

Because when they finally find their place — when they settle into a home that feels like theirs — it won’t just be one person’s story. It will be a chain of small, generous moments. A quiet collaboration. A series of assists.

And somewhere in that chain… might be you.

I've known Waffles & Genesis for over a year, and have followed their story since they were at animal control. These are two of the goodest dogs who deserve a loving home. They are so easy and sweet and loving. They just need a chance.
